Summary – Resumen
The pressures of tourism in MED are a major challenge for its sustainable future due to its seasonality and impact on limited geographic areas, which lead to an increase in the need for water resources and an increase in waste generation that exceeds carrying capacity limits (CCL) of tourist destinations. While tourism can contribute to the improvement of local social and economic conditions, it can also increase environmental pressures and jeopardize the preservation of local identity and heritage. Moreover, due to the Covid-19, social distancing imposes further limits on the CCL.Therefore, improving tourism management is essential as well as improving understanding of the pressures in order to build concrete strategies towards a more sustainable and responsible tourism model for the MED area. ALTER ECO PLUS will support «mainstreaming processes» to improve public policies related to tourism management. The starting point is the “Carrying Capacity Limit” calculation tool, a fully operational and functional tool/methodology, which will support the decision-making process and the mechanisms relating to policies to facilitate territorial absorption. The aim is to facilitate the integration of the tool which aims to balance the effects of tourism development taking into account the CCL and expanding the focus of tourism development beyond the local destination level.

La presión del turismo en el área mediterránea es un gran desafío para la sostenibilidad futura debido a su marcada estacionalidad y a su impacto negativo en áreas geográficas limitadas, lo que conduce a un aumento en la necesidad de recursos hídricos y un aumento en la generación de residuos que excede los límites de capacidad de carga de los destinos turísticos. Si bien el turismo puede contribuir a la mejora de las condiciones sociales y económicas locales, también puede aumentar las presiones ambientales y poner en peligro la preservación de la identidad y el patrimonio . Además, debido al Covid-19, el distanciamiento social impone mayores límites a la capacidad de carga, por lo que mejorar la gestión turística es fundamental, así como mejorar la comprensión de las presiones para construir estrategias concretas hacia un modelo de turismo más sostenible y responsable en el área mediterránea. ALTER ECO PLUS apoyará procesos de «mainstreaming» para mejorar las políticas públicas relacionadas con la gestión turística. El punto de partida es la herramienta de cálculo del “Límite de Capacidad de Carga” elaborada por la Universidad Ca Foscari de Venecia en el marco del proyecto ALTER ECO, una herramienta plenamente operativa y funcional que apoyará el proceso de toma de decisiones . El objetivo es facilitar la integración de la herramienta que tiene como objetivo equilibrar los efectos del desarrollo turístico teniendo en cuenta la capacidad de carga y expandiendo el enfoque del desarrollo turístico más allá del nivel de destino local.
